Researchers as McMaster University have discovered that people in long-term remission of ulcerative colitis have high levels of a chemical named prostaglandin D2. Prostaglandin D2 is produced by mast cells in the body which serve the purpose as “protector” cells. They are thought to be involved in wound healing and defense against pathogens.

“The levels of prostaglandin D2 were only elevated in those patients in long-term remission, and that suggests it is a key factor in preventing new episodes of ulcerative colitis,” said John Wallace, director of the Institute and a professor of medicine for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

The study may lead to a new treatment options for ulcerative colitis that would increase the production of Prostaglandin D2 . The full study will be published in the National Academy of Sciences on June 14 2010.

Blueberries for an Ulcerative Colitis Diet

In a recent study from Lund University in Sweden, scientists investigated different combinations of dietary fibre (blueberry husk) and probiotics that could potentially alleviate and prevent ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer.

They discovered that combining blueberries and probiotics enhanced the anti-inflammatory effect when comparing probiotics or dietary fibre alone.

The authors suggested the reasons behind this anti-inflammatory effect are as follows:

When blueberries and probiotics were consumer together both butyric acid and propionic acid increased in the blood. These two substances are believed to enhance the immune system and are energy sources for intestinal cells.

Blueberry fibre is not entirely broken down in the large intestine offering a barrier of production from substances that would otherwise cause inflammation especially in those diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

Blueberries are full of nutrients including antioxidants which have been shown to repair cell damage resulting from oxidative stress and inflammation.

There is not enough research to recommend blueberries as an adjunctive therapeutic treatment for ulcerative colitis, however, there’s no harm in adding blueberries to your diet.

It should be noted that the researchers tested common and general probiotics such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria and not Mutaflor specifically. However, there are many Mutaflor clinical trials that test Mutaflor in ulcerative colitis patients. You can most definitely add blueberries to your diet while taking Mutaflor.
